INTEGRATED DESIGN & MANUFACTURING LAB
RESEARCH
Origami-based sheet metal (OSM) folding/bending is an extension of origami folding to 3D metal sheets structures from a flat sheet of metal by a sequence of die-less folding fabrication operation.
Metal AM parts have comparable mechanical properties to traditional manufacturing parts if carefully processed and designed.
15-5 PH stainless steel and Inconel 718 are two of the most commonly used metals in laser-based AM.

Sustainable & Intelligent Manufacturing
Among the goals of sustainability are manufacturability and manufacturing energy. Sustainability and intelligent manufacturing aim to improve the life cycle of parts starting from the design phase and ending by fabrication.
ABOUT IDM Lab
The Integrated Design & Manufacturing Lab at The University of Toledo focuses on investigating the effect of metal forming process parameters on the produced materials and parts characteristics and features. The lab's research aspects include material characterization in the light of processing variables, manufacturing processes modeling, and machine learning to provide a sustainable and intelligent design for manufacturing solutions.
